As a child I remember reading urban legends and imagining how these characters might look. Years passed
and my interest peaked. I felt the mystery and tension in the characters when reading. And thinking about
the tension I remember the fear as a child. In this piece, A Day in the Life, I explore what it means to
displace the tension and fear. The fascination comes from taking the power Wakwak evokes. Wakwak, from the
Philippines, is a vampiric, bird-like creature with bat wings and sharp talons used to slash the hearts of
humans. In Wakwak I see a frightening creature that comes at night to take me away. To displace the tension
and fear I built Wakwak from foam and acrylics. In the sculpting process I rethink the credibility of this
creature. The brush strokes aid in releasing the tension created in my childhood. Built together, it is like
a ritual. I see Wakwak not as a frightening being, but as a being built on fear, that feeds on it to make it
exist. A Day in the Life, is a series of what I perceive Wakwak does in its daily life.
